Discord and the Era of Global Age Verification: The Challenge of Digital Trust

The digital ecosystem is changing. What began as a trend in gaming platforms like Roblox has now reached one of the giants of online communication: Discord has announced the implementation of a global age verification system.

Starting next month, Discord will require its users to prove their legal age to access certain features, marking a turning point in how social networks manage minor safety and adult privacy.

How will the system work?

Discord proposes two main paths to validate its users' identity:

  1. Video Selfie with AI Analysis: The user takes a video selfie that is analyzed by an AI model on the device itself. Discord ensures that this flow does not use biometric facial recognition and that the data never leaves the user's terminal.
  2. Official Identity Document: The submission of documents such as an ID card or Passport, which will be verified by an external provider.

In parallel, the company will deploy an age inference model capable of predicting if a user is an adult based on their behavior, without the need for an explicit verification process for all profiles.

The dilemma between Safety and Privacy

The implementation of this system is not accidental. It responds to growing international political and legal pressure to protect minors from sensitive content and unwanted contacts. Furthermore, with rumors of an imminent IPO in March, Discord aims to clean up its image and offer a more controlled and safe environment for advertisers and strategic partners like Sony.

However, the path is not without challenges:

  • Creative evasion: Last year, during tests in the UK, some teenagers managed to bypass the system using photos from the game Death Stranding.
  • Data integrity: Following a data leak suffered by a former third-party provider of Discord last October, concern for privacy is at an all-time high. The company has responded by changing partners and promising the immediate deletion of document captures.

The Joinble vision: KYC as a pillar of trust

At Joinble, we closely follow these movements. The Discord case demonstrates that KYC (Know Your Customer) is no longer just a financial tool, but an essential infrastructure for digital coexistence.

The key to success in these massive deployments lies in the balance: forensic security to detect fraud and absolute respect for user privacy. In a world where physical and digital "deepfakes" are increasingly common, having AI agents capable of verifying the truth without compromising identity is the only path to a segmented but secure Internet.
